According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMH):
In the U.S. - one in six adults lives with a mental illness.
90% of those who die by suicide have an underlying mental illness.
Much is being done to increase the importance of mental health awareness. However, when one struggles with invisible disabilities – in this case – mental illnesses, particularly in societies where messages to do more and be more are relentless, their prevalence, severity and impact on individuals and those close to them can be difficult to understand or even to acknowledge.
Mental health is a topic many of us are not informed about; we are taught how to look after our physical selves. We try to maintain good personal hygiene, to eat regularly and to obtain enough sleep. But, we’re often at a loss for what to do when our psychological selves are struggling; when we’re feeling overwhelmed, isolated or unhappy. Studies show that awareness of our mental health, such as our emotions and stressors, can influence our abilities to implement positive strategies to navigate it.
The viewer is invited to enter a space that humanizes mental illnesses and raises awareness for its prevalence. The viewer is encouraged to renounce any judgements or assumptions they may have about people who are living with or have lived with mental health conditions. And perhaps, to consider ways they can support their friends and loved ones through challenging times.
